Off with the cast

No, I wasn’t planning a DIY amputation. After all the delays at the hospital, I decided to remove the cast from my fractured right wrist and get on with recovering in my own time. I ordered a brace with front and back splints, as recommended by the doctor, then planned how to remove the cast while I waited for it to arrive.

I definitely wanted to keep my arm intact so I had to work out a means of removal that could be done left-handed with minimal risk. After some thought, I decided to remove the fabric covering with round-nosed hairdresser’s scissors, use a hacksaw to cut through the fibreglass coating and anvil loppers to cut the plaster before cutting the inner bandage with the scissors. Once the cast was split, I’d soak my entire arm in warm water for 15 minutes to soften the cast and then pry it apart.

The plan worked flawlessly. I took my time, while the Other Half was safely at work, and had the cast off in less than an hour. After a good wash, I fitted the new brace and was pleased to find it was comfortable, easy to fit and very supportive. Another good piece of DIY. Next, brain surgery on the kitchen table…
