Caution: dog at work

Work continued today on the refurbishment of the first of our six chicken houses. The hinged, downward opening door came off and was replaced with a sliding door set in plastic tracks. Wooden tracks would swell when wet, jamming the door. And as happened previously, every time I took the camera out someone would insert himself into the shot…

The nest box roof was covered with new roofing felt, while a new length of timber was let into the rear wall above it. The previous length had both rotted and splintered. And yes, it’s him again.

Fitting the plastic tracks for the new door was fiddly, but with the Other Half’s help I eventually managed to get them on. One cracked but not to the extend that it had to be replaced. It also appears the new door passed inspection.

The main, lift-0ff roof was also recovered with new sheets of roofing felt. And where did he come from?

With the renovations and creosoting out of the way, it was time for the boys to get stuck in. Their job was to limewash the interior of the hut. Now, where did that dog go?

With the inside of the roof done, both the boys climbed into the house and proceeded to lay the limewash on with gusto. Oh, and he’s back.

We use limewash because it’s cheap, goes a long way, is anti-bacterial and makes it easy to spot bug infestations. Dogs also stand out better against a white background.

The boys had to work the limewash into every nook and cranny. It took them a while, but they enjoyed themselves enormously and didn’t turn too white themselves. And yes, it’s him again. Tomorrow, we start the next hut and, yes, I suspect he’ll be back in shot again, too.

  1. He is working hard inspecting, your foreman!!

    • I was in stitches selecting and editing the photos. I’d have one or two initial frames of each scene that were dog free, then “bing” Harvey would be there. Cheeky mutt.

  2. He knows we all want to see how he’s doing.

He obviously enjoys being the centre of attention. And besides, there is always the possibility that what is happening may involve FOOD!! No harm in hoping

  4. That’s the way Harve! There is nothing like a bit of good publicity for your furry image……. Why….. I think Stoney is jealous that you are in each shot and not him!!!!

  5. Tie a paintbrush to his tail, plop him in the hen house, and make him happy. Tail wags, hen house gets coated, and Harvey justifies his presence in the pictures! Simples.

  6. bless the little fella he certainly made me laugh
