‘It must have been the goat…’

I’m not the only one who encounters people with distinctly peculiar ideas about livestock.

I was topping up our pig wallows when a neighbouring farmer wandered over for a chat.

In the course of our conversation, he mentioned that his father’s farm neighbours a croft whose owner keeps pet pigs and a pet goat.

The pig herd includes both gilts and boars, although the boars were supposedly castrated prior to being bought.

However, one of the gilts farrowed a litter of piglets almost a year after the crofter had bought the pigs.

Clearly, at least one of the boars had either not been snipped or not been snipped correctly.

Not so, apparently.

My neighbour said his father had been talking to the crofter about the litter, when she observed it was really strange that the gilt had become pregnant.

“Oh, how so?” asked the farmer.

“Well, the boars are all castrated so it must have been the goat.”

And no, the crofter wasn’t pulling the farmer’s leg. My neighbour said the crofter honestly believed the billy goat had sired the litter of piglets.

  1. Oh wow, that’s certainly interesting! Perhaps the litter resembled the goat? ;)

  2. Your kidding,
The next thing you’ll be telling us a pollock and a conger got
    together and produced a ling.
    Walter.

    • No, I’m not kidding and I’m not making this up. Our neighbour said his father’s first thought was that the lady was winding him up, but he quickly realised she was absolutely serious.

  3. Hi Stonehead.
Sorry I doubted you after going back on to searching the net I found this connection, there really has been a lot of cross breeding going on. Its really scary to see what the outcome is.

    • I thought the crab-chicken cross—a cracken—had potential, until I remembered the Bishop of Bergen described the kraken as being the size of a floating island and with a penchant for pulling ships to the bottom of the sea. On second thoughts, I think I’ll pass on plucking that one…

      • I’m into the chicken crab claws, the smaller claws have brown meat and the pincer claws white meat. Would be great in a Chinese stir fry. Rice wine, ginger and small peppers.

  4. Goats make great curries

    Pigs make great bacon

I like curry and i like bacon

The idea isn’t without its merits

  5. Lol, oh that is funny. Know if it had been sheep and goats, their has been at least one hybrid born. And I know of one femle Nubian goat who bothers the heck out of Ryeland ram every time she goes into heat. Though no mating has taken place, though she is determined.

  6. Too funny. I better keep a close eye on my sheep and donkey then. lol.

It would be interesting to see pictures of these piglets sired by a goat.

  7. Hilarious! It’s hard to believe some people are that silly!

  8. The harmless nuts make the world go round! LOL Although the scientific ignorance appals me, as a biologist.

  9. There’s hope for me yet, I haven’t pulled a bird in years. I simply didn’t realise the field was so wide open.
