Planting sunflowers

The Wee ‘Un enjoyed growing sunflowers last year so he decided to grow even more this year. First, he claimed the back of one of the herb beds and dug it over with a fork. He collected a barrow load of well-rotted muck from the muck boxes, sieved it and brought it around to his sunflower bed, where he spread it with a scoop.

The Wee ‘Un raked the muck into the bed, then levelled it off.

After measuring the amount of space he had available, checking the distance needed between rows of sunflowers, and calculating the number of rows he could fit in, the Wee ‘Un marked out the position of his rows.

He sowed the seed at six-inch intervals, giving him an opportunity to count in sixes.

The Wee ‘Un had just enough space to sow four rows of sunflowers, inching his way along his plank to spread his weight and avoid compressing the soil heavily.

The Wee ‘Un finished the job by using a hoe to break up the areas that had been compressed beneath the plank and then watered in the seed. He’s looking forward to seeing how many of the seeds germinate, how many plants flower, and how many sunflower seeds he can harvest.
