Now we have ‘our’ winter weather

We’ve had heavy snow and we’ve had temperatures below -10C on a fair number of days this winter, but until today we haven’t had what I’d describe as our typical winter weather.

For us, typical winter weather has to combine snow, sub-zero temperatures and a whacking great wind.

So, it was quite good to get up this morning and discover that not only was it -4.7C and not only was it snowing, but the wind was already pushing 20mph.

Drifts were being pushed across the road, not enough to stop the Other Half getting to work in the Land Rover but enough to stop the school bus getting through.

(The boys were very pleased as I spoiled them a lot by allowing them four hours, in total, on the old Play Station—a week’s worth in one day.)

The wind continued to pick up through the day, peaking around 35mph in the afternoon and sending all the pigs scurrying back inside every time they ventured out.

It’s a little more quiet now, with the wind down to 20mph or so with snow still falling and the temperature hovering around -4C.

Yes, it’s hard working outside. Yes, it feels much colder than when it’s -10C with no wind. Yes, I get a lot of wind and ice burn to my face.

But it doesn’t matter because it’s good to see ‘our’ typical winter weather at last.

  1. Just been alerted by juvenile neighbours playing nocturnal snowballs…. that winter had returned to South Wales despite the evidence of flowering daffodils!…Hooray for youth!

and yet Stoney Dundee was sunny, bright with no wind and + 1 or 2C…a definite north south divide in the weather yesterday.

  3. Nothing here on the Isle of Wight…..as expected. What we did get two weeks ago was a once in 40 years event.

  4. Just had an inch of snow dump on us here in south west FRANCE…!

  5. We had a lot more snow overnight and this morning, but it’s hard to say just how much thanks to the wind. There’s about 4-6 inches on most flat areas, but in others the wind has scoured it back to the ground. And there are deep drifts all around.

  6. Compostgirl got to play on the Wii a LOT during the snow days off school…it was one of her highlights…..
