Back in May, the boys planted four rows of sunflowers in the front garden. The odds were stacked against them as the soil was still on the cold side, mice and birds took a proportion of the seeds, slugs chomped many of the seedlings that came through, and strong winds snapped several of the plants as they grew. The wet summer didn’t help either, but over the last few days the remaining sunflowers finally came good.
The boys are absolutely delighted as there are enough sunflowers to provide them with seed to plant next year and still have plenty to roast for snacks. Of course, they’re going to have to watch out for the birds as those seeds will be very, very attractive to our little feathered friends. But when there are this many plants and the same again out of shot, the boys are confident they will get something from their crop.

Well done boys!
Excellent work lads…I’m a great lover of Sunflowers…
I would love to see how you harvest and roast them. I planted a huge patch of sunflowers this year that did well, but I ended up letting birds feed on them, because the instructions for harvesting them were rather elaborate, and it involved, of all things, tucking nylon stockings around the head of each sunflower. I couldn’t imagine doing that 100 times. I hope there’s a simpler way, and that you share it.
Hope you get to eat some, boys. Melanie and Katie-Rose planted sunflowers last week, we have had immense dust storms, gale force winds and freezing temps since then, so don’t know how they’ll go.
Seven blooms to be proud of…in both pics
I have been blogging for a month. I had too much pent up emotion and it had to go somewhere. I happened on your blog by an answer you gave in blog surfer about ” if I cant capture someones attention in 3 paragraphs…” so I had to read something you wrote. I like it here! I think I am coming back.
