Potato varieties—Courage

We tried Courage for the first time this year, but were very disappointed by the yield. This is all we lifted from a 40m row with most of the plants only producing two or three tubers. A second early, the variety is quite floury, has a good flavour and makes excellent chips.

Courage is said to be susceptible to late blight on foliage, but it’s an early maturing variety so we had large tubers despite the haulms coming off mid-season. It has high resistance to potato cyst nematode and average resistance to other disease. Courage is described as storing well in the short-term, but we’ll have to wait to see how true that is. (Note: this is a modern variety on which the plant breeder’s rights run until 2028 so it’s not legal to save seed tubers for the following year.)
