Potato varieties—Catriona

We had a superb yield of Catriona this year, with this being the yield from a single 40m row. Catriona is a multi-purpose, second early although we’ve found it’s not particularly good as a chip potato. It does have a good flavour and lends itself well to boiling, mashing and grating (I like to make potato soda bread with grated Catriona).

An attractive white potato with blue to purple eyes and creamy flesh, Catriona is low in blight resistance and had its haulms removed early in the season. Despite this, we had a prodigious crop. The variety is resistant to scab but, unlike previous years, we had no problems with slugs.

  1. Very pretty spud, do the purple eyes remain during cooking if you don’t peel it?

  2. That sounds a very interesting bread Stonehead, going to post up the recipe?
    Please!!
